How to Catch Pals in Palworld Mobile
Master every catching technique — from your first Pal Sphere to legendary captures. Learn Sphere types, weakening strategies, status effects, and the secrets pro players use to catch them all.
Catching Basics
Catching Pals is the core loop of Palworld Mobile. Every Pal you capture adds to your Paldeck, earns you experience points, and gives you a new ally for combat, base work, or exploration. The process seems simple on the surface — weaken a Pal and throw a Sphere — but there is a surprising amount of depth to master.
When you throw a Pal Sphere at a wild Pal, the game performs a catch rate calculation behind the scenes. Several factors feed into this calculation: the Pal's current HP percentage, its level relative to yours, any active status effects, the quality of the Sphere you are using, your Catching Power stat, and whether you hit the Pal from the front or behind. Understanding how each factor contributes will dramatically improve your capture success rate.
Your first catch will be a scripted tutorial capture of a Lamball or Foxparks near the starting shrine. After that, the training wheels come off and you are free to explore the Palpagos Islands and catch anything you can find. The key to efficient catching is preparation — always carry multiple Sphere types, healing items for yourself, and a team of Pals that can apply status effects without dealing lethal damage.
Pal Sphere Types
There are six tiers of Pal Spheres in Palworld Mobile, each suited to a different level range and situation. Using the correct Sphere for the job is the single biggest factor in catching success.

Early game, you will rely heavily on Basic and Mega Spheres. As soon as you unlock the Furnace and start smelting Ingots, craft a batch of Mega Spheres to replace your Basic stock. Giga Spheres become available around level 25 and should become your default Sphere for anything level 30 and above. Ultra Spheres are expensive but necessary once you start hunting tower bosses and alpha Pals in the wild. Legendary Spheres are reserved exclusively for the four legendary Pals: Jetragon, Paladius, Frostallion, and Necromus.
Weakening Strategies
Bringing a wild Pal down to low HP is the most reliable way to increase your catch rate. The catch rate bonus scales inversely with remaining HP — a Pal at 5% HP has a dramatically higher capture chance than one at 50% HP. However, there is a fine line between weakened and defeated. Accidental kills waste your effort and cost you the capture.
Use weak weapons. The basic Bow with standard Arrows deals consistent low damage that is easy to control. Upgrade to a Bow with Poison Arrows if you want damage-over-time to help whittle down HP without overcommitting. Avoid high-damage weapons like the Handgun, Shotgun, or Assault Rifle unless you are confident in your ability to stop attacking at the right moment.
Use low-damage Pals. Switch to a Pal with a weak basic attack or a non-damaging skill. Neutral type Pals like Lamball or Cattiva have weak attacks that are perfect for chipping down HP. You can also recall your Pal mid-fight to pause damage and assess the Pal's remaining HP visually — the Pal's body language changes as it gets weaker, with visible limping and slowed movement at very low health.
Use a melee weapon for precision. The club or spear deals moderate damage per hit and gives you full control over when to stop. Land 3-4 hits on a low-level Pal, then switch to your Sphere. For higher-level Pals, use a combination of ranged attacks to soften them up and melee to fine-tune the HP level.
Watch for health thresholds. Experienced players learn to recognize HP thresholds visually. A Pal at full health is aggressive and moves quickly. At around 50% HP, it starts showing visible damage effects. At 20-30% HP, it will begin limping and its attack patterns slow down. This is the sweet spot for throwing your Sphere.
Status Effects & Catch Rate
Inflicting status effects on a wild Pal before throwing your Sphere provides a significant catch rate bonus. The three most effective statuses for catching are Sleep, Freeze, and Stun. Each one adds a flat percentage bonus to your capture chance that stacks multiplicatively with the HP bonus.
Sleep is the best status for catching. A sleeping Pal cannot move or attack, giving you a stationary target for an easy back shot (see next section). Pals with sleep-inducing skills include Daedream (Dark-type passive), Katress (Dark Beam), and certain Grass-type Pals with spore-based attacks. Sleep duration varies by skill level but typically lasts 5-8 seconds — plenty of time to line up the perfect throw.
Freeze works similarly to Sleep but is slightly less effective for catching because frozen Pals can still be hit by attacks and unfrozen by damage. Ice-type Pals like Sweepa, Vanwyrm, and Penking have freeze skills. Freeze duration is shorter at around 3-5 seconds, so you need to act fast. The catch rate bonus from Freeze is roughly 10-15%.
Stun is the shortest duration status at 2-3 seconds but offers a solid catch rate bonus. Electric-type Pals like Sparkit and Beakon can inflict Stun. Stun is best used as a combo starter — stun the Pal, then immediately throw a Sphere before it recovers.
Avoid Burn and Poison for catching purposes. While these statuses deal useful damage over time, they can kill the Pal before your Sphere connects. Use them only when you are already at very low HP and need the final bit of damage to reach the sweet spot, or when you want to trigger a damage-over-time effect and wait for it to tick the Pal down before throwing.
Back Shots & Positioning
One of the most overlooked mechanics in Palworld Mobile is the back shot bonus. If you throw a Pal Sphere at a wild Pal from behind — ideally while sneaking — your catch rate receives a significant boost. The bonus is estimated at 10-15% on top of all other modifiers, and it stacks with status effects and low HP bonuses.
To execute a back shot consistently, follow these steps:
- Aggro the Pal from the front with a single ranged attack or by getting close enough to trigger its detection zone. It will turn to face you and begin approaching.
- Strafe around in a wide circle while keeping your distance. Most Pals have slow turn speeds, so you can circle around them before they fully rotate.
- Enter sneak mode (crouch) once you are behind the Pal. Sneaking reduces detection range and prevents the Pal from turning to face you again.
- Line up the throw so the trajectory arc lands on the Pal's back. The Sphere impact point is what matters, not your position — you can be behind the Pal but throw poorly and miss the back bonus.
- Throw the Sphere and watch for the capture animation. If the Pal breaks free, you may have lost the back shot bonus — reposition and try again.
Back shots are especially effective when combined with Sleep or Freeze, because the stationary Pal gives you unlimited time to position yourself perfectly behind it. Practice this combo on low-level Pals like Lamball and Cattiva until the movement pattern becomes muscle memory.
Sneak also reduces the aggro range of wild Pals, letting you get closer before they notice you. This is useful in high-density spawn areas where you want to single out one Pal without attracting its neighbors. Approach in sneak mode, identify your target, and either engage from stealth with a back shot or open with a status attack.
Catching Power Statue
The Catching Power Statue is a buildable structure that permanently increases your global catch rate. You can construct it at your base after unlocking the blueprint in the technology tree. The statue costs 20 Stone, 10 Paldium Fragments, and 5 Wood to build initially, but upgrading it requires increasingly rare materials.
Each upgrade tier increases your Catching Power by 5-8%, and the bonuses are multiplicative with all other catch rate modifiers. This means the statue becomes more valuable as you stack other bonuses on top of it. A fully upgraded statue at tier 10 provides roughly a 60-80% total catch rate improvement, effectively doubling your capture success on high-level targets.
Upgrade materials per tier:
- Tiers 1-3: Paldium Fragments, Stone, Wood — relatively cheap, upgrade as soon as possible.
- Tiers 4-6: Refined Ingots, Polymer, Paldium Fragments — requires a functioning furnace and mid-game resource chains.
- Tiers 7-10: Carbon Fiber, Pal Metal Ingots, Ancient Civilization Parts — this is where the statue becomes expensive but transformative. Farm dungeons and alpha bosses for Ancient Parts.
Prioritize upgrading the Catching Power Statue over other base luxuries in the mid-game. The increased catch rate pays dividends every time you throw a Sphere, saving you materials and time over the long run. A good rule of thumb is to upgrade the statue whenever you unlock a new Sphere tier — by the time you are using Giga Spheres your statue should be at least tier 4-5.
Palbox & Condensation
Your Palbox is the structure where all captured Pals are stored. Every Pal you send to the Palbox becomes available for base assignments, party formation, and breeding. The Palbox has a capacity limit that increases as you upgrade the structure. At max level, you can store hundreds of Pals across multiple pages.
Why catch multiple copies of the same Pal? The Pal Condensation system lets you merge duplicate Pals into one to increase its star rank. Each star rank boosts the Pal's stats, work suitability efficiency, and active skill damage. A 4-star (max rank) Pal is significantly more powerful than a base version — roughly 40-50% stronger in both combat and base work roles.
Condensation requires 4 copies to reach 1 star, 8 more for 2 stars, 16 more for 3 stars, and 32 more for 4 stars — that is 64 total copies of the same Pal for a max-rank condense. This sounds daunting, but many common Pals like Lamball, Cattiva, and Foxparks spawn in large numbers and are easy to catch in bulk. Dedicate one farming session per week to catching 10-20 copies of a Pal you want to condense.
Your Palbox also tracks your total Pal capture count, which feeds into your global capture milestone rewards. Milestones are unlocked at 10, 25, 50, 100, 250, and 500 total captures. Each milestone rewards you with technology points, rare materials, and permanent stat boosts. Catching every Pal you encounter — even duplicates — progresses these milestones faster.
Advanced Catching Tips
Once you have mastered the basics, these advanced techniques will help you catch even the most difficult Pals in Palworld Mobile:
Multi-Sphere throwing. When a Pal breaks free from a Sphere, you can immediately throw another Sphere before the Pal fully recovers. The catch rate does not decrease after escapes — each throw is an independent roll. Keep throwing until you run out of Spheres or the Pal escapes combat. This is the standard strategy for alpha Pals and bosses that have naturally low catch rates.
Sphere trajectory mastery. The arc of your Sphere throw matters more than you think. If the Sphere hits an obstacle (a tree branch, a rock, another Pal), it will bounce off and the catch attempt fails. Practice throwing in open areas first. Learn to read the green targeting indicator — it shows you exactly where the Sphere will land. For moving targets, lead the throw slightly ahead of the Pal's path.
Environmental advantages. Some biomes have environmental effects that boost certain catch strategies. In the Snowy Mountains, Freeze status lasts longer because of the cold ambient temperature. In the Desert, Pal detection range is shorter during sandstorms, making sneaky back shots easier. In Swamps, Pals move slower, giving you more time to line up throws. Exploit these biome-specific advantages whenever possible.
Time of day. Nighttime spawns different Pals than daytime in many biomes. Dark-type Pals like Daedream and Nox are more common at night, but their aggro range is also larger in darkness. Bring a torch or equip a headlamp to improve visibility and reduce the ambient aggro penalty at night. Some Pals also have higher catch rates at specific times — the game does not tell you this, but community testing has confirmed a small time-of-day modifier for certain species.
Party passives matter. Certain Pals have passive skills that boost your catching power when they are in your active party (even if they are not deployed). Daedream's "Catching Booster" passive increases Sphere effectiveness by 5%. Nox has a similar passive that stacks. Keep one of these Pals in your party whenever you are on a dedicated catching expedition. The bonus is small but it adds up over hundreds of throws.
Food bait. Some Pals are attracted to specific food items placed on the ground. If you are struggling to catch a Pal that keeps running away, try dropping its favorite food (check the Paldeck entry for diet preferences) and waiting in sneak mode nearby. The Pal will approach the food and begin eating, giving you a stationary target for a back shot. This is especially effective for skittish Pals like Nitewing and Elphidran.
Common Mistakes
Even experienced players make these catching errors. Avoid them and your capture rate will skyrocket:
Using the wrong Sphere tier. Throwing a Basic Sphere at a level 35 Pal is a waste of materials. The catch rate is so low that you will burn through 20+ Spheres before you succeed — if you succeed at all. Always match your Sphere tier to the Pal's level range as shown in the table above. One Ultra Sphere is more cost-effective than ten Basic Spheres.
Not checking the Pal's level. Always scan a Pal before engaging. If it is 10 or more levels above you, the level difference penalty will make catching extremely difficult regardless of Sphere quality. Come back later when you have leveled up and upgraded your Catching Power Statue. Use a Pal Scope or the Paldeck scan feature to check levels from a safe distance.
Over-damaging the Pal. Killing a Pal you meant to catch is the most common early-game mistake. Switch to your weakest weapon when the Pal is below 30% HP. Use poison damage for precision. Take your time — there is no timer on catching. If you are unsure about the remaining HP, pause your attacks and observe the Pal's movement speed and visual state.
Ignoring the Catching Power Statue. Players who skip the statue early on struggle with catching for the entire mid-game. Build it in your first base layout and upgrade it whenever you have spare resources. The statue is not optional — it is a core progression system that directly affects your ability to capture higher-level Pals. Think of it as essential infrastructure, not a luxury upgrade.
Not carrying enough Spheres. Running out of Spheres mid-expedition forces you to fast travel back to base and craft more, wasting valuable play time. Always carry 50+ Spheres of your primary tier and 10-20 of the next tier up. In the late game, carry at least 20 Ultra Spheres and 5 Legendary Spheres at all times. Spheres stack to 999 in your inventory — there is no excuse for underpacking.
Forgetting status effects. Players who just throw Spheres at full-HP Pals without using status effects are working ten times harder than they need to. Always lead with a Sleep, Freeze, or Stun attack before throwing. The catch rate difference between a status-affected Pal and a normal Pal is the difference between a 1-Sphere capture and a 10-Sphere slog.
